Poster for 2012 The poster is formated with a manipulated photo of dandelions seeds in an almost effortless fluidity of motion and simplicity. Faces of Evanston was conceived as an idea while attending the Summer Olympic Games in Greece in 2004. It was a magical time for me and the Greek people, instilling a great sense of pride as the Olympics returned home. The city of Athens – named after Athena, Goddess of Wisdom – was transformed into a showcase of culture and philosophy welcoming the World. The streets were closed to traffic, with volunteers helping guide the International Community . The city was immaculate, with not even a single cigarette butt to be found. The streets on which Socrates, Euripides and Plato once walked were adorned with giant photos of people from all cultures. At night, videos of Greek culture were shown from rooftops. Suspended from the edifices of ancient building were quotes from Aristotle, and other greats. With the lights of the Acropolis in the distance, a magical sense of connection and belonging was born.
Inspired after returning home, the idea of a photo contest to highlight the Evanston community was born. It was presented as a project and soon found support from my colleagues in the Evanston Kiwanis Club and other community builders. Faces of Evanston is brought to you by the Kiwanis Club to help showcase the beauty, kindness and character of our city. Evanston is a magical place where one never feels alone. There is an energy and sense of purpose that resonates from the streets and buildings; in its people, coffee shops, learning institutions and well educated population. It is through the power of video and photography that we hope to capture and share our interpretation, creating a vision for the future for ourselves and for the larger World.
Please take the time this summer and help capture the “Simplicity” of Evanston, and submit your entries to Faces of Evanston.

A new feature on the site is the ability to vote for your favorite photo or video without having to register. The new plugin allows for an individual to vote once from their computer. The way to vote for your favorite photo or video is to go to the right side of the site and click on vote in 2012 contest. Once in the gallery you will be taken to a page that allows an individual to view the entries in full screen. Along the bottom of the page one will see 3 icons; eye, leaf and thumbs up sign. The eye represents the number of eyes that have viewed the photo, and the thumbs up allows the visitor to the site to vote. This part of the competition is called “Voice of the People” and our sponsor for this years “Voice” is the McGaw YMCA. The photo or video with the most hits will receive a $75.00 cash prize and the distinction of being the “Voice of the People” award winner for 2012.
After the competition ends on August 31, 2012 a panel of expert judges will be selected from the Evanston community to select the winners and honorable mentions. A reception will be held at Noyes Cultural Arts Center on September 27, 2012.

We have added Google Translator to the Faces site to give our community and visitors an opportunity to read about our amazing city in multiple languages. Please be aware that Google Translator is about 70% accurate in its translations so please excuse any inaccuracies in the translation of the English text. Another functional issue you may encounter is viewing the photos and video while in another language. The photos and video unfortunately can only be viewed while in the original English text and not during the translation process. So please enjoy the wonderful artistry of the photos/video taken from prior years or possibly enter your own photos/videos into this years competition. All are welcome to enter the photo/video contest with the only criteria being the photos/videos must be taken in Evanston. A select number of winners will receive a cash prize, the photos/video will travel around the Evanston community in a traveling photo exhibit for a year and the photos/videos will be listed on the Faces website as a 2012 winners. Prior winners have included a visitor from Spain winning second place, professional and non-professionals photographers, visitors as well as local residents submitting and having their photos selected as a winner. So please enter and help us see Evanston through your eyes.
