The Faces of Evanston would like to thank Mickey Propadovich with MetaForms – Architects, Inc. Mickey has been instrumental in helping us mount the photos for display during the winners  reception event, as well as mounting the photos on the foam boards that travel the photos throughout the city for the year.
Mickey is an Evanston resident and  the sole proprietor of his architectural practice, MetaForms-Architects, Inc.  His  eye for detail during the mounting and spacing of the photos has been shaped by his architectural training and sensitivity to the primary
components of our physical world: space, light, form, proportion, color and texture.
Mickey philosophy in life as in work  is to capture the vital essence of a scene while excluding anything which doesn’t contribute to the overall effect. The enduring principle of less is more is the force that guides him in both composing and organizing an  image for display as in giving form to a building. Yet that’s not enough to produce really good work Mickey states, ” What stands out as memorable in both pictures and buildings is drama. There must be balanced tension between opposing forces with a touch of mystery holding everything together.”
“To have the opportunity to consistently orchestrate such creations is as rare as it is satisfying.” Mickey adds.

Mickey as well as others are the rare wonderful people behind the scenes that make Faces of Evanston a success.  It is through team work and community building that brings so many wonderful people together to give back to the City they call home.  So thank you photographers, videographers, residents, visitors, businesses, for-profits, non-for-profits; you are the back bone of the community; you are the Faces of Evanston.

Please take out your cameras and video equipment and help us capture the “Simplicity” of our community in the many images that only you can capture.  Help us see Evanston through your eyes.

Special Thanks

We at Faces would like to acknowledge several individuals that have taken a leadership role in helping with the event. Without their help this event would not be growing and evolving with the passing years.

First of all, we would like to thank Bill Smith with EvanstonNow for helping us launch our first web presence. As a collaborative endeavor for several  years it has proven that a business and a non-for-profit can impact a community in a substantial way. This can be seen on how well received the photos have been by the citizens and visitors to the community and the growth of the event. Therefore we give credit for the vision of embracing technology and working with us to bring it to the Evanston community to Bill Smith at www.evanstonnow.com

Second, we would like to thank Annie Fenberg for her dedication and creative talents in marketing and design. Annie designed and helped register the logo, conceptualized the color theme  that changes from year to year, designed three of our posters; years 3,4,5,8 and helped correct and edit other posters.  Her creative abilities, marketing experience and skills in executing the event on time has made her an essential component to the event.  For masterfully bringing to life the creators vision for “Faces of Evanston” we thank Annie Fenberg.

Third, we would like to thank Dennis King.  Dennis has taken on the task of bringing  Faces to the next level in web design.  Some of the new features in our site include social media, 3D cube plug in to see the photos in full screen size, universal translator and easier voting process along with viewing submitted entries in full screen size.  His understanding and substantial knowledge and experience in this field has made the forward progress of Faces a reality.  For his commitment and superior knowledge of web design in bringing this years contest to the Evanston community we applaud Dennis King at webpresenceshop.com

The Genesis of Faces of Evanston

Category : Uncategorized

Faces of Evanston was conceived as an idea while attending the Summer Olympic Games in Greece in 2004.    It was a magical time for me and the Greek people, instilling a great sense of pride as the Olympics returned home. The city of Athens – named after Athena, Goddess of Wisdom – was transformed into a showcase of culture and philosophy welcoming the World. The streets were closed to traffic, with volunteers helping guide the International Community . The city was immaculate, with not even a single cigarette butt to be found. The streets on which Socrates, Euripides and Plato once walked were adorned with giant photos of people from all cultures. At night, videos of Greek culture were shown from rooftops. Suspended from the edifices of ancient building were quotes from Aristotle, and other greats. With the lights of the Acropolis in the distance, a magical sense of connection and belonging was born.

Inspired after returning home, the idea of a photo contest to highlight the Evanston community was born. It was presented as a project and soon found support from my colleagues in the Evanston Kiwanis Club and other community builders. Faces of Evanston is brought to you by the Kiwanis Club to help showcase the beauty, kindness and character of our city. Evanston is a magical place where one never feels alone. There is an energy and sense of purpose that resonates from the streets and buildings; in its people, coffee shops, learning institutions and well educated population. It is through the power of video and photography that we hope to capture and share our interpretation, creating a vision for the future for ourselves and for the larger World.

Please take the time this summer and help capture the “Simplicity” of Evanston, and submit your entries to Faces of Evanston.

New voting process for Faces 2012

Category : Uncategorized

A new feature on the site is the ability to vote for your favorite photo or video without having to register.  The new plugin allows for an individual to vote once from their computer.  The way to vote for your favorite photo or video is to go to the right side of the site and click on vote in 2012 contest.  Once in the gallery you will be taken to a page that allows an individual to view the entries in full screen.  Along the bottom of the page one will see 3 icons;  eye, leaf and thumbs up sign.  The eye represents the number of eyes that have viewed the photo, and the thumbs up allows the visitor to the site to vote.  This part of the competition is called “Voice of the People” and our sponsor for this years “Voice” is the McGaw YMCA.  The photo or video with the most hits will receive a $75.00 cash prize and the distinction of being the “Voice of the People” award winner for 2012.

After the competition ends on August 31, 2012 a panel of expert judges will be selected from the Evanston community to select the winners and honorable mentions.  A reception will be held at Noyes Cultural Arts Center on September 27, 2012.

Google Translator

Category : Uncategorized

We have added Google Translator to the Faces site to give our community and visitors an opportunity to read about our amazing city in multiple languages.  Please be aware that Google Translator is about 70% accurate in its translations  so please excuse any inaccuracies in the translation of the English text.  Another functional issue you may encounter is viewing the photos and video while in another language.  The photos and video unfortunately can only be viewed while in the original English text and not during the translation process.  So please enjoy the wonderful artistry of the photos/video taken from prior years or possibly  enter your own photos/videos  into this years competition.  All are welcome to enter the photo/video contest with the only criteria being the photos/videos must be taken in Evanston.  A select number of winners will receive a cash prize,  the photos/video will travel around the Evanston community in a traveling photo exhibit for a year and the photos/videos will be listed on the Faces website as a 2012 winners.  Prior winners have included a visitor from Spain winning second place, professional and non-professionals photographers, visitors as well as local residents submitting and having their photos selected as a winner.  So please enter and help us see Evanston through your eyes.

Hello everyone and welcome to ” Faces of Evanston” 2012 photography and videography competition.  Faces is entering it’s 8th year of competition with  cash prizes, a traveling display of photos and video throughout the Evanston community and a  reception at Noyes Cultural Arts Center to be hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Evanston, www.evanstonkiwanis.org . Along with our traditional concept we have many new changes we would like to share with you.

In Year “7″ we saw Faces adding a youth component to the event allowing the youth of Evanston to enter 5 photos and/or one video for free.  Additional photos and videos can be submitted with a $5.00 entry fee per photo/video.
We also saw the introduction of  video into competition.

As communication becomes increasingly interactive and the power of the web continues to grow and evolve Faces has also evolved to include additional dimensions as we enter the application age in technology.

Some changes we have made to this year’s competition include:

1)We have added Google Translate to allow the international community to view the photo/video and feel more included and interconnected.
2) We have added a 3D cube that allows the viewer to click on a photo and have the image go full screen.
3)We have also added a new plug in to allow this year’s entries to be viewed and voted on in a larger more interactive format.
4) We are adding links to the websites of our currents traveling exhibit sponsors with additional Evanston locations to allow more people to view the amazing photos and videos of Evanston via the web.  At present the photos travel to 10 different physical locations to be viewed and shared by the community but with the web it allows the photos to be viewed by a larger audience.

5) We have also instituted a permanent display location for prior year’s traveling exhibits in the Loraine Morton Civic Center.

6) We have removed the registration process for voting on your favorite photo in the “Voice of the People” part of the competition

Evanston, since its founding as a community, has been a leader in the changing landscape of society.  With its rich history, thriving arts community, world class university, amazing beaches we find Evanston to have a  strong sense of community and place.  You can often find people living in Evanston referring to themselves as Evanstonians, this exemplifies the pride people feel about being an Evanston resident and their community.

Faces hopes through this contest to provide a platform for  photographers and videographers to capture the images of our amazing city and help us view Evanston through their eyes.  .  This year’s theme is Simplicity.  It was chosen as a guide and direction for the photographer and videographer with a broad enough interpretation to allow for creativity and originality. So photographers and videographers take out your cameras the contest begins today.

Poster for 2012

Category : Featured, Photo & Video Contest

The poster is formated with a manipulated photo of dandelions seeds in an almost effortless fluidity of motion and simplicity.  It’s in the simplicity of design, form and function that drew us to this concept for the poster and the theme for this years contest.  Simplicity can be found in every area of our lives. From the simple and effortless design of an Apple computer that founder Steve Jobs embraced. To the simplicity of a flowers design that allows its color, scent and form to cause us to pause reflect and appreciate the wonders of Mother Nature.  To the simplicity we chose to live our lives and embrace each and every day.  Simplicity is all around us so help us capture these moments in a photo or video for Faces 2012.

This year’s poster was designed by Anna Fenberg.  Anna has been behind the scenes as the marketing director for Faces for the past 5 years.  Her contributions have included designing the logo for Faces, initiating the yearly color theme to distinguish and tie in each years event, helping trademark the logo, designing 4 of the posters including this years poster called Simplicity.  Her prior posters have included; The Wards of Evanston, Public Art of Evanston and Love.

Anna’s design and marketing skills were developed and honed in while working in New York for a mens fashion and lifestyle magazine. She is now working for an international conference in  Paris that will be spotlighting the best of digital entertainment content creation, applications, solutions and strategy innovations to engage with audiences  across multiple platforms: Internet, Mobile, IPTV, Connected TV, Tablets and Social Media.

We thank Anna for her support and contribution with Faces of Evanston.  Her collaboration has been indispensable.

This year’s theme is Simplicity

Category : Featured, Photo & Video Contest

We chose the theme, Simplicity for our 2012 competition because it was broad enough to encompass a variety of photo and video interpretations but also help guide the artist in looking at the essential character of things surrounding them each and every day.  As poets and philosophers for centuries have encouraged us to live in the moment and enjoy the events of  everyday life we ask the viewer to give pause, reflect and rejoice in the beauty that enriched and mystified us all.   Moments such as a scarf blowing in the wind or a boat floating gently the water after a quiet summer day, or a mother brushing the hair out of her child’s eyes and even a balloon dancing at the end of a string.  The inspirations for a simpler life are endless and we look to you the artists, photographers, videographers and community builders to help bring these images into focus.

Please excuse our facelift as we prepare to launch this years “Faces of Evanston” photo and video contest.  As Faces enters its 8th year of competition we will be making changes in the way photos are entered, voted on and exhibited thus embracing the changing technology with the use of the web.

We would also like to say thank you for your feedback on last years contest,  it was very informative and helpful.  We  hope to see your amazing photos and videos when the competition begins on April 15,2012 -August 31,2012.  Please note this years color theme is Periwinkle and Black and will be featured in all of Faces materials 2012 to help distinguish it from prior years exhibits who have their own individual color palette.
